Generation of FM using XR-2206 chip to study the Wave Shapes

The basic idea behind using Frequency Modulation (FM) in audio sound synthesis was proposed by John Chowning in 1973.  Frequency Modulation (FM) is where the output of one oscillator is used to modulate the pitch/frequency of another; the oscillators are called the Modulator and Carrier respectively. The pitch/frequency of the Carrier is being changed (modulated) by the Modulator, and depends on the instantaneous voltage from the Modulator. The instantaneous frequency of a carrier wave is varied according to a modulator wave such that the rate at which the carrier varies is the rate of the modulating wave, or modulating frequency. It results from applying an output from the modulator to the control voltage input of the carrier.

Here to generate Frequency Modulation (FM) wave we have used XR-2206 which is a monolithic function generator integrated circuit capable of producing high quality sine, square, triangle, ramp, and pulse waveforms of high-stability and accuracy. The output waveforms can be both amplitude and frequency modulated by an external voltage. Frequency of operation can be selected externally over a range of 0.01Hz to more than 1MHz. The circuit is ideally suited for communications, instrumentation, and function generator applications requiring sinusoidal tone, AM, FM, or FSK generation.
