Marriage Registration Certificates Will No Longer Be Valid: Law Commission

Now you may have to face persecution for stay at hotel with your legally married wife. Yes you heard it right. Although having your marriage registration certificate authenticated by the Marriage Registrar, it will not be enough proof here after for the newlywed couple in India.

It has been suggested by the Law Commission of India, that marriage registrations will very soon be linked with Aadhaar Number of individuals. Otherwise the marriage registration certificates will no longer be valid. The recommendation comes in the wake of the government making it mandatory for Aadhaar to be linked with several essential services. The commission also said that the purpose is to prevent fraudulent marriages and denial of subsistence to forsaken women.

‘The Births and Deaths Registration (Amendment) Bill, 2015 must clarify that non-registration of a marriage would not make it void, but attract a penalty of Rs 5 per day’s delay in registration’ – the commission said. The commission’s recommendation will now be considered by the Union Law Ministry. If convinced the ministry can make it a rule following which linking Aadhaar with marriage certificates will become mandatory.
